Story
Als ambitioniertes SANTANA-Tributeprojekt wurde The MAGIC of SANTANA im Frühjahr 2010 von Gerd Schlüter (Gitarre), Andreas Rohde (Timbales, Percussion, Vocals) und Jürgen Pfitzinger (Congas, Bongos, Percussion) gegründet. Weitere Musiker sind Jens Skwirblies (Keyboards), Martin Hohmeier (Bass), Oliver Steinwede (Drums), Pablo Escayola (Conga, Bongos, Percussion) und Oliver Schröder (Gitarre und Gesang). Die Ansprüche waren von Beginn an hoch.

Maßstab konnte nur SANTANA selbst sein. Um die Musik so authentisch wie möglich klingen zu lassen, orientierten sich The MAGIC of SANTANA auch bei den Instrumenten und der Verstärkertechnik soweit wie möglich am Original. Doch was sich daraus entwickelte, sprengte schnell den Rahmen des Erwarteten und führte bereits zu vielen „magischen Momenten“. Immer mehr aktuelle und ehemalige Musiker von Santana treten gemeinsam mit The MAGIC of SANTANA auf, sind begeistert von dem, was sie erleben und ziehen ihre Kollegen mit. Dies ist in Europa einmalig.
Nach ersten Auftritten von The MAGIC of SANTANA ermöglichten bereits 2010 gute Kontakte des Gitarristen Gerd Schlüter zu Santana-Bandmitgliedern, die (fast) komplette SANTANA-Band zu treffen. Während der Europa-Tour kam es am 22. Oktober im berühmten Gaga-Studio in Hamburg zum intensiven Austausch in freundschaftlicher Atmosphäre mit Jeff Cressman (Posaune), Dennis Chambers (Drums), Dave Mathews (Keyboards), Benny Rietveld (Bass) sowie Raul Rekow (Congas). Höhepunkt dieses Treffens war dann eine Session von The MAGIC of SANTANA mit Benny Rietveld und Raul Rekow im Aufnahmeraum des Gaga-Studios sowie am Folgetag ein spontanes Meeting in Hamburg von SANTANAs Timbalito Karl Perazzo mit Andie Rohde, dem Timbalero von The MAGIC of SANTANA.

Als Nachwirkung dieser inspirierenden Begegnung entstand die Idee, künftig auch Originalmusiker von Santana einzuladen und gemeinsame Konzerte zu geben.
Nach Fertigstellung des ersten Live-Videos folgte eine Anfrage an die Sängerlegende Alex Ligertwood (Sänger bei Santana von 1979 bis 1994), ob Interesse an einer Zusammenarbeit besteht. Ligertwood antwortete: „I checked out your video, you guys are good, so lets talk. When? Where?“
Das erste Konzert mit Alex am 21. Mai 2011 begründete eine schöne Freundschaft. Weitere gemeinsame Konzerte wurden geplant und durchgeführt – eines auch mit dem Rod Stewart Saxofonisten Jimmy Z als Special Guest.
Am 13. Oktober 2012 folgte die nächste magische Begegnung. Zuletzt hatten sie 1992 auf dem Santana-Album „Milagro“ miteinander gesungen; nun freute sich Alex Ligertwood auf den damaligen Weggefährten und aktuellen Santana-Sänger Tony Lindsay (11 Grammy Awards). An diesem denkwürdigen Abend traten die beiden mit The MAGIC of SANTANA auf. Tony war so enthusiastisch über dieses Erlebnis mit Alex nach zwanzig Jahren, dass er kurz darauf in Redwood City, CA, ein ähnliches Konzert unter dem Motto „SANTANA Members Past & Present“ gab, bei dem neben Alex Ligertwood weitere SANTANA-Originale mitwirkten…
Und es kam noch besser. Gerd Schlüter hatte Anfang 2013 in den USA die Möglichkeit, den Kontakt zu nahezu allen SANTANA-Bandmitgliedern zu intensivieren. Er traf sie in Las Vegas während ihrer Tour im „House of Blues“. Aus diesen Treffen mit der ganzen Band ergaben sich neue Ideen. The MAGIC of SANTANA konnten Raul Rekow, der Santana nach 38 Jahren verlassen hatte, als Gastmusiker gewinnen und spielten am 4. Juli 2014 mit ihm und Alex Ligertwood in Ungarn. Am folgenden Tag waren The MAGIC of SANTANA mit Raul und Alex der gefeierte Headliner beim Stadtfest in Meiningen und bescherten dem begeisterten Publikum eine magische Sommernacht.
Einen Sommer später durften wir Richard Baker (Hammond Orgel, Keyboards) als Special Guest auf die Bühne holen und spielten Konzerte in Tschechien, Österreich und Deutschland.
2016 ging The MAGIC of SANTANA das erste mal mit Alex und Tony auf Spanien-Tour; dabei ist das erste Live Album entstanden. Inzwischen sind sowohl Alex als auch Tony gute Freunde geworden und nicht nur wir, sondern wohl auch sie selbst betrachten sich eher als Bandmitglieder, als „nur“ als Special Guests.
Im März 2019 hatten wir einen weiteren kleinen Höhepunkt. In der Empore Buchholz, in der wir mittlerweile schon des öfteren gespielt haben, gab es ein ganz spezielles Konzert. Im ersten Teil des Konzertes spielten wir einige Songs in akustischer Version. Es gab zwar zuvor schon einmal dieses besondere Hörerlebnis in Bad Segeberg, diesmal waren aber auch Alex & Tony mit dabei. Und auch der zweite Teil des Gigs sollte etwas ganz Besonderes werden. Am Saxophone wurden wir von Tina Tandler begleitet (bekannt u.a. durch unzählige Live Auftritte mit Roland Kaiser). Sie verlieh der Musik von Santana durch ihr gefühlvolles, sinnliches Spiel eine ganz besondere Note.
Was steht noch an in 2019 ? Im November werden wir erstmalig für 6 Konzerte in die Niederlande reisen.
Wir sind sehr glücklich darüber und gespannt, welche weiteren Begegnungen dieser Art wir noch erleben dürfen; fest steht, dass diese außergewöhnliche Gruppe, die weit mehr ist als eine Tribute Band, das Prädikat „Europas No.1 SANTANA Show“ verdient!

In 2010, The MAGIC of SANTANA was founded by Gerd Schlüter (Lead Guitar), Andreas Rohde (Timbales, Percussion, Vocals) and Jürgen Pfitzinger (Congas, Bongos, Percussion). Furthermore we have Jens Skwirblies (Keyboards), Martin Hohmeier (Bass), Oliver Steinwede (Drums), Pablo Escayola (Conga, Bongos, Percussion) and Oliver Schröder (Gitarre und Gesang). From the start, this was a very ambitious projekt with high-level expectations.
Of course, the only serious scale could only be Santana himself. To produce a sound as close to the original as possible, The MAGIC of SANTANA orientate most closely to the genuine instruments and amplifiers. Soon the expectations got overtaken by many magic moments that happened on the stage. More and more current and former members of SANTANA join the stage along with The MAGIC of SANTANA; they are excited about what they experience and they tell their buddies about it. This is a one-of-a-kind thing in Europe!
After the first shows in 2010, The MAGIC of SANTANA took the chance to meet nearly the whole Santana band, this made possible through existing contacts between Gerd and some of the members of Santana. While Santana was on tour in Europe, a friendly meeting took place on Oct 22th, with Jeff Cressman (trombone), Dennis Chambers (drums), Dave Mathews (keyboards), Benny Rietveld (bass) as well as Raul Rekow (congas). The meeting took place at the famous Gaga studios in Hamburg, Germany and culminated in a session in the recording room at Gaga, with The MAGIC of SANTANA and Benny Rietveld and Raul Rekow, followed by a spontanious meeting between Santana´s timbalero Karl Perazzo and The MAGIC of SANTANA´s timbalero Andreas Rohde. This was the inspiring moment to be followed by the idea to invite genuine members of Santana to join the stage with us.
After finishing the first live-video, we asked legendary Alex Ligertwood (Lead singer with Santana 1979-1994) if he´d be interested in working together with us. His answer: „I checked out your video, you guys are good, so lets talk. When? Where?“
The first show with Alex took place on May 21st, 2011, and it was the begin of a good friendship. From that moment on, we played further shows, sometimes having other special guests in addition, like Jimmy Z, saxophone player with Rod Stewart.
Then, on Oct 13th, 2012, it was time for the next magic moment. It was 1992 when they sang together, recording the Santana album “Milagro” – now Alex was excited to meet again current lead singer with Santana, Tony Lindsay . who won eleven Grammy Awards with Santana. That notible evening, they played a show together with The MAGIC of SANTANA! Tony was very excited about this event with Alex that he played a similar show shortly after in Redwood City, CA. The motto of the show was “SANTANA Members Past & Present“ and Alex and more genuine SANTANA members joined in.
And there´s more. In early 2013, Gerd travelled to USA and took the connections to the various Santana members to an even deeper level. He met them in the “House of Blues” down in Las Vegas during the Santana tour. This led to new ideas. The MAGIC of SANTANA got Raul Rekow – who left SANTANA after 38 years – as a special guest and played a show with him and Alex in Hungary (Juli 14th, 2014); shortly after that, they played a show in Meiningen, Germany, providing a magic summer night to the audience.
In 2015, we were very happy to have Richard Baker (Hammond, Keyboards) as a special guest; we played shows in Czech Republic, Austria and Germany.
In 2016, The MAGIC of SANTANA were on tour in Spain, producing their first live album (feat. both Alex and Tony). By now, both Alex and Tony are much more than “only” special guests to us: they are friends and rather “real” members of the band. These are only a few (but of course, good!) reasons why The MAGIC of SANTANA is known as “Europe´s No.1 SANTANA Show”.
In march 2019 we had another little highlight. At Empore Buchholz, we played there many times, we had a very special concert. In the first part we played an acoustic set, not for the first time but this time with Alex & Tony. And the second part should be something very special. On saxophone we were accompanied by Tina Tandler (known by countless live performances with Roland Kaiser). She gave the music of Santana a very unique touch with her soulful, sensual playing.
What's up next in 2019 ? In november we will travel to the Netherlands for 6 shows for the first time.
